Conscious pleasure is the act of deliberately bringing our full selves and full awareness to the good sensations we experience. When we consciously choose the pleasure available in any given moment our entire being softens and we expansively open to the present moment. Life feels richer and fuller… It’s kind of a hidden superpower every human has. We are creatures who are motivated by pleasure, but in denial of it. So, imagine what happens when we finally start using this superpower to create healthy habits and, by extension, the life we desire. Today, in Day 7 of the Sensual Reset Challenge, I’m sharing how conscious pleasure can help good habits stick and faster. Let’s discuss:
Journal Exercise:
In a journal or note app, write down 3 habits you’d like to form this month. Journal on the following prompts for each habit:
- How can you pleasurably cue this habit? (i.e. I can plan fun workout outfits that I’m excited to wear and put them out the night before, so when I see them in the morning, I’m excited to get dressed and go to the gym. OR. I can think about how good I feel afterwards and how good it feels to be a person who XYZ.)
- Are there any annoyances or obstacles in your way? List them and brainstorm creative ways to maneuver around them so that your habit is easier to implement and more convenient. The more pleasurable the route to your habit, the better.
- What’s intrinsically pleasurable about this habit? What feels good in the moment, as you’re doing this habit? Focus on these pleasurable aspects every time you complete this behavior.
- What feels good about the habit afterwards? Does it positively alter your mood, thoughts, and general feeling of well-being? Does it positively boost your self-belief, confidence, or pride? Don’t think about how it impacts you in the long-run. Reach for the immediate positive good feeling you can lean into after completing the habit. Do this every time to reinforce your habit.
